A look at Familiaris Consortio, The Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World. This week at LovingTheChurch.com, I discuss Blessed Pope John Paul II and the Catholic Family. Turning to his Apostolic Exhortation, Familiaris Consortio (The Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World), I consider the questions:

What exactly is the Catholic family?

What practical things can the Catholic family do to remain faithful to Christ?

Do Not Be Afraid: Blessed John Paul II on Fear

POPE JOHN PAUL II AT VATICAN IN 1978On May 1, 2011, in front of 1.5 million people, Pope Benedict XVI beatified the Servant of God John Paul II. In his homily, the Holy Father made reference to those famous words of Blessed Pope John Paul II during his first solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Square:

“Do not be afraid! Open, open wide the doors to Christ!”

What a moment in Church history! The Catholic Church had just been shaken by the sudden death of Pope John Paul I. The Second Vatican Council, closing just 13 years before, was surrounded by much division and distortion in regards to what it actually had taught and desired. It was the height of the Cold War. And, in the free world, the Culture of Death was seizing control through the widespread use of contraceptive birth control and abortion. Precisely at this moment, God sent a “shining light” to lead His Church that no bushel basket would be able to cover up.

“Do not be afraid! Open, open wide the doors to Christ!”

To this day, Blessed John Paul II calls us out of fear and darkness. He calls us to be courageous and generous in giving our all to Christ.

Growing up, I remember looking to him with confidence. I trusted him. When he spoke I listened; I heard Christ in his words. I saw Christ in his actions. Blessed John Paul II inspired me to have certitude in my Catholic Faith, to know that regardless of what the world or my peers might say I belonged to the Church Christ Himself founded. What courage his witness instilled in my siblings and I! Growing up Catholic was exciting, especially in the Deep South. Many times, I would have to give an account for my Catholic beliefs. Over and over, I heard Blessed Pope John Paul II calling, “Do not be afraid!”

Today, Blessed Pope John Paul II’s call continues to strengthen my faith, hope, and love.

In a world rocked by economic turmoil and uncertainty, I have faith that God will provide, that he will remain true to His word (Mt 6:25-34). In a culture that continually embraces sin and death; I remain full of hope. In an age so full of hate, my prayer is to be able to love as Christ commands (Jn 13:34).

There may be economic insecurity, but I don’t have to fear it. Science can parade questionable evidence in an attempt to undermine belief in God, but I don’t have to doubt. Sin and death may permeate the world around me, but I don’t have to despair.
Love may be difficult when so many people are resentful, bitter, and ignoring reality, but I don’t have to hate.

When considering the current state of the world, I often recall the words of Haldir, an elf of Lothlorien, to the Fellowship in J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic work, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring:

The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.

Blessed John Paul II reminded us of this truth – we need not fear because love is greater!

Blessed Pope John Paul II

“Do not be afraid! Open, open wide the doors to Christ!”

Today, I try to open wide the doors of my heart to Christ. It is not always easy, but thankfully God, in His infinite wisdom, gave a sinner like me the sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion. I know where to go to be healed, to be forgiven, to experience the love and mercy of Almighty God.

Thank you Blessed John Paul II for calling us to overcome fear, to trust in God with hearts open wide to Christ.

Blessed John Paul II pray for us! Amen.

This week at LovingTheChurch.com, I reflect on Pope Benedict XVI’s homily at the Papal Mass on the occasion of the Beatification of the Servant of God John Paul II. The Holy Father’s personal reflections on Blessed John Paul II’s example serves as a model for all husbands and fathers.
